Interior Art

Two-Page Spread

Full Dimensions of Submitted Art: 16 1/4 inches wide by 10 3/4 inches tall (16.25" x 10.75")

Finished Dimensions: (trimmed and bound) 16 inches wide by 10 1/2 inches tall (16.0" x 10.5")

Bleed: 1/8 inch (0.125") on outer edges. No bleed required along binding.
(Note different width compared to cover art!)

Gutter: 1/2 inch (0.5") on either side of binding.
The gutter is the area along the binding where details are hard to see because of the curve of the pages. Avoid putting text and important image details in this area.

Resolution: 600 dpi preferred for grayscale.
600 dpi is the max resolution for digital grayscale printing with our printer. 300 dpi is the minimum acceptable resolution. If you wish to render your own halftoning bitmap, use 1200 dpi, but this is an advanced technique. Ask us for more details!

Color Mode: Please use grayscale or B&W bitmap! Saving a grayscale image in color format, even when the pixels are in shades of gray, can result in a file that's 3-4 times larger than the same image converted to grayscale.

Digital File Types: Common non-lossy file types preferred — TIFF (zip-compress file), Photoshop PSD, JPEG/JPG at highest quality setting.

Single Page

Full Dimensions of Submitted Art: 8.125  x 10.75" maximum dimensions. (Illustration does not necessarily need to fill the page.)

Finished Dimensions: Page trimmed to 8" x 10.5"

Bleed: 1/8" on top, bottom and one side. Ask if the editor knows whether the illustration will be on the left or right. It is often difficult to predict interior art placement until the layout is being created. If you are creating an image that is intended to bleed off the page in a specific way, consider making the image flippable, to be easier to work into the layout. (For example, avoid text in the image.)

Gutter: 1/2 " on one side. As with bleed, above, knowing where an image will be placed with respect to the gutter is not always known in advance, so think about whether your image could work on either the left or right page, with or without being flipped. The downloadable templates have a gutter indicated on both sides. Choose to focus on one, or make an image that works with both.

All other requirements same as above for two-page spreads.

Spot Illustrations and Accents

Dimensions: Maximum dimensions same as for single-page illustrations, above.

Design considerations: Think about creative ways your illustration can be placed in/around the text on the page. Tall and narrow images can squeeze between columns of text. L-shaped images can wrap around the top, sides and/or bottom of text. Simple designs that can be converted to striking watermarks can float behind text. Feel free to contact us if you have creative ideas you'd like to confirm before finalizing your art.

All other requirements same as above for two-page spreads.

Cover Art

Wrap-Around cover

Full Dimensions for Submitted Art: 16 5/8 inches wide by 11 inches tall (16.625" x 11") . Horizontal dimension breaks down into 0.25" left bleed + 8" back cover + 0.125" binding + 8" front cover + 0.25" right bleed. Vertical dimension breaks down into 0.25" top bleed + 10.5" page height + 0.25" bottom bleed.

Finished Dimensions: (trimmed and bound) 16 1/8 inches wide by 10 1/2 inches tall (16.125" x 10.5").

Bleed: 1/4 inch (0.25") on all outer edges (Note different width compared to interior art!)
The purpose of a bleed is to make an allowance for variability in the trim of the cover. Therefore, do not precisely align content to the bleed edge or set up content near the edge that might look wrong if the cover trim is off.

Binding: 1/8 inch (0.125")
(Approximate width. This will be adjusted by Sofawolf as necessary depending on the page count of each issue.)

Resolution: — 400 dpi
400 dpi is the max resolution for digital color printing with our printer. 300 dpi is acceptable.

Color Mode: CMYK is best, but RGB is acceptable.

Digital File Types: Common non-lossy file types preferred — TIFF (zip-compress file), Photoshop PSD, JPEG/JPG at highest quality setting.
