Ursula Vernon

Ursula has built a career as an acclaimed storyteller, whether using illustration, words, or unique combinations of both. Digger, her epic fantasy webcomic about a wombat out of her element, won the 2012 Hugo for Best Graphic Story, several Web Cartoonists’ Choice Awards and a Broken Frontier Award, and it led to her nomination for the 2006 Will Eisner Comic Industry Award in the category “Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition” (A fuller list of awards, nominations and accolades can be found on our Digger product page.). Nurk: The Strange, Surprising Adventures of a (Somewhat) Brave Shrew, her first illustrated story book intended specifically for young readers, is currently on Oprah’s Reading List for kids 10 to 12 years old, and has been adapted into a full-cast audiobook. Her Dragonbreath series uses a unique combination of prose and comic panels to recount the fantastic exploits of a young dragon named Danny and his nerdy friend Wendell, and has consistently received starred reviews from Kirkus Reviews, including two entries in their 2010 Best Children’s Books list. Both Nurk and the Dragonbreath series have been Junior Library Guild Selections.

Published by Sofawolf Press are her graphic novel series Digger, her novel Black Dogs (Vol. 1 & Vol. 2), and her sketchbook It Made Sense At The Time.

Ursula currently lives in Pittsboro, North Carolina, where she works full-time as an artist, writer, and creator of oddities. She lives with her boyfriend, his beagle, a small collection of cats, and a large collection of Indonesian masks, all of which mostly contrive to keep her out of trouble. You can learn more about all of her creative exploits at www.ursulavernon.com.
